This is one of the saddest posts I may ever write about.
As I write this, this is my saddest moment on this trip to date. No, I didn’t lose my backpack nor my wallet (knock on wood), but I lost accidently deleted my collection of graffiti photos in Melbourne before backing them up on my laptop. The saddest post I’ll write for sure.
I actually love this type of street art when it’s done tastefully. And I would consider Melbourne one the world’s great capitals of street art.
Q & I zigzagged the streets of New Brunswick and Fitzroy taking many photos along the way. There were really over a 100 great graffiti shots I took with my DSLR and they’ve fallen into the abyss. Luckily Q took some photos herself on our point & shoot (note: my DSLR had about 90% of the graffiti shots). But at least we have a handful to share!
You’ll find this down one of the alleys within the city center.

This was only about half of the mega Jam Master Jay tribute wall.

First attempt to do a panoramic stitched photo.
This is what the software came up with.
I didn’t even want to write a post about this, but Q thought I still should because it was a big learning lesson for us, (for me). Make sure to TRIPLE check that you’ve backed up your photos before you delete them off your memory card.

Great pics guys, love them! As locals, we probably need to get out to these areas and check this out (still something we haven’t done).
As for deleting the photos off the memory card, we’ve all done it. I deleted a big collection of photos from San Antonio from a memory card thinking they were backed up already and then when I went to write a post I realized I didn’t have them – it hurt even more because I went out deliberately on the last night just to get those shots.
Along with backing up, stock up on memory cards so you don’t need to delete anything!
Sorry to hear about SA. Thanks for the tip guys! Good thing memory cards are getting cheaper.

I love your photos on the article. They are so colorful…
I am sad that you lost yours before making a backup
Thanks Tunimaal. Backup Backup Backup is the lesson here. Thanks for trippin by!

No!! That’s so sad. But Q’s shots are really lovely. I love Melbourne’s street art. We lived there for a few months and the cafe I worked at was covered in graffiti. It was so beautiful. I loved arriving at work everyday, but sometime would forget it was there when working inside and wondering why EVERYBODY was stopping to stare at the building or take photos of it.
Yup. The graffiti is really impressive in Melbourne. Glad the city doesn’t fight against it.

Awww I feel you on the lost photos. We had a memory card error a few years ago on a return trip from Venezuela and I cried. My techy boyfriend was not able to recover all of the photos so we sent it out to a company and they quoted us about 2000 bucks to recover the photos. So now we just stare at the card. Gone forever.
I think always having class 10 good cards and lots of them, formatting them often, is the best way to prevent that. But nothing saves not backing up. I back up my back up these days. Lesson learned. I’ll be in Melbourne in 10 days!
Sorry to hear about that. Didn’t think to format them. Thanks for the tip! Be sure to head to New Brunswick, the graffiti feels like it’s never ending there!

Awww. That is terrible and one of my biggest traveling fears. Though, the collection of photos in this post are amazing!
Thanks Annette! Yeah. We had about at least 50 other walls of really unique graffiti. Oh well, there’s always next time!

I once had to CONSCIOUSLY delete photos from a gorgeous 2 week trip to British Columbia because my stepdad urgently needed the card to take photos for some insurance thing! It was awful, I had shots of the Rockies, me in a helicopter, aaah, I feel your pain. But hey, I’m a firm believer that point and shoots are also legit! Great shots!
Thanks! I agree. Luckily our P & S camera is great. I hope you got to at least keep a few of Rockies shots?

There are plenty of good books on the Graf scene in the ‘Burn’ of course that’s not the point as people like to have their personalised collection of shots from their perspective. Hang in there.
Most of the best OzHipHop labels are based there also, like ‘Obesecity’ for instance.
Nice point. My collection would’ve been unique as the graffiti is always changing… oh well. Live and learn!

Oh that’s terrible! Sorry that happened. That’s a major fear of mine. I recently had a hard drive die on me that contained photos that were not backed up anywhere else. I was sick for days. Fortunately, it was only the power supply and I didn’t loose anything. I’m sure you will never let it happen again.
Whew.. close call for you! I’m sure it was enough for you to always be careful about it in the future.

Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear about that!:( I used to worry about losing my data too; and I am afraid to say that I have also experienced that a few times myself, and I just feel like banging my head each time. I can relate to that heart sinking moments when I realized that I didn’t really back it up and mistaken it to another batch of data, sighs!
Anyway, your collection is still quite impressive, and if it’s any consolation, at least you still have these graffiti photos instead of losing all of them. Like you said, it’s most important to learn from our mistakes and move on, instead of dwelling on them.
I must say your photography skills are excellent 🙂
Awww. Thanks. Easy to make photos look good these days w/ the great camera technology and photo editing software. Thanks for trippin’ by!

Ahhhh SO sad! But how incredible is the street art in Melbourne? One of my favorite parts of living in that city for sure–always something new to discover and the walls are always changing and evolving. So awesome how the city supports emerging artists.
My thoughts exactly. It’s great to know that a big city can understand the talent and culture in its area and appreciate it.

Oh, losing photos is devastating, no matter how it happened. I lost loads of pic taken on a visit to Cuba, when I lost my camera.
These photos of yours make me want to check out more of the Melbourne street art, which is my home town! Something you don’t really appreciate when it’s home!
Yup. We’re guilty of not seeing everything back at home too. Like we’ve never been to Alcatraz in SF!

Losing photos is terrible because there is no way of getting them back. Looking at the bright side, at least you have some pictures left.
I have been on that street too years ago, and I remember loving it so much, it was one of my favorite part of Melbourne. Thanks for bringing good memories back! 🙂

We’re definitely double checking now before we delete so not a total loss. Such a great part of Melbourne to explore, we miss it. Where are you two these days?

I can relate… so sad, this JUST happened to me. I went to Barcelona for 3 short days this August and there was a lot of great graffiti pieces there (along with a bunch of ugly scrawled tags, but they don’t count). I really like the art of graffiti, at least when you can tell the person(s) who have done it have invested in the piece.
Unfortunately, when I got home about 60% of the pictures taken that day came up as “corrupted” when I tried to moved them over to my computer… I’m absolutely gutted, I only had around 5-6 pictures of the graffiti left 🙁
